He had acquired a bunch of new Chaos units from another good friend (Russ, he of the Celesticon tournament). We upped the points value to 750, which is still pretty manageable for noobs like us.

This post again features unsightly pictures of unpainted miniatures. You have my apologies, but we are both working on our new armies whenever we get the chance. As I've just signed up for Geek Nation Tours Adepticon trip for 2015, I will definitely be getting these Sisters up to fully painted status asap.

We played another Maelstrom of War mission. Deployment was long-ways, with six mysterious objectives placed. We'd get 3 objective cards per turn, which we kept hidden from our opponents. Devon won the roll off and deployed first. With his new Defiler staring me down I had to cluster my small army into two ruins to avoid his Line of Sight. There was no place for my proxy Exorcist (subbed in from my old Dark Angels army) to hide, so it would have to just rely on it's 13 front armor and cover save.
My new Dominion squad bravely stepped out into the open and fired their flamer and 3x meltaguns on the Possessed. The flamer actually killed one and a melta-gun got another.

On Devon's turn, his Possessed returned the favor, firing their bolt pistols and killing two out of the Dominion squad. This ended up working against him, as when it came time to charge he rolled a '4', but his squad had 'Rage' or whatever the special rule is that allows a re-roll on one of the Charge dice. He rolled again. New total: 5 inches. Just out of range. D'oh!

Ultimately, it didn't end up costing him much, as the Dominion squad moved past the Possessed to try and execute the already wounded Daemon Prince. They failed utterly to accomplish this and the Daemon Prince charged in and wiped them out easily. Meanwhile the Possessed moved up and charged the Canoness. A long, drawn-out battle would ensue in which the Canoness would eventually fall, but it took several rounds of combat to get there. The Daemon Prince would fall victim to the Multi-melta of the Sisters squad occupying the ruined chapel.
My Seraphim squad had managed to thread the needle of Possessed and Daemon Prince and landed in front of the Cultists, hand-flamering 9/10ths of the squad. The lone survivor ran off and the Seraphim capped Objective #2. They were looking like prime targets for the Defiler, however.
On my right flank, the Chaos Marines had zoomed up to the ruin containing the Retributors with Heavy Bolters, backed up by my second Sisters troop squad. The Marines jumped out of the rhino, but couldn't charge, so were subjected to a round of shooting that killed off 2. The remnants charged on the following turn, and as with the Canoness it took several rounds of pushing and shoving for the combat to be decided. The weight of numbers the Sisters brought to the battle eventually saw the Marines defeated (and the Multi-melta glanced the Rhino to death, with assistance from the Exorcist).
The Seraphim squad made a miraculous triple-6 invulnerable save when they suffered a direct hit from the Defiler. They then made a dash from Objective #2 to #1, grabbing another VP.
Right after this, I got a card for Objective #1 again. So, back they went to secure that objective again. They'd pressed their luck repeatedly throughout the game and their number was finally up. The Defiler hit them again and wiped out the whole unit in one shot. Boom!

The Sisters had made an insane number of armor and invulnerable saves through the early and mid-game, but probability snapped back into place by the game's end. I'd lost the Dominions, Seraphim, Canoness and a few Sisters from each of the Troop squads. About 50% or so. Chaos had lost everything except the three Possessed. We're unsure now if the Defiler survived or not. I glanced/penetrated it's armor at least 3 times, possibly 4.

Either way, the final score was 6vp to 5vp in favor of the Adepta Sororitas. It was a closer game than it felt, with most of the carnage favoring the Sisters, but when it came down to VPs, it was really close. If those Seraphim had suffered a direct hit earlier in the game, Chaos would have won.

Back in the late '90s and early 2000's Warhammer 40K was practically the only game I played, but I eventually moved onto other games and miniatures rules and have only recently returned to playing 40K this summer. I don't intend to rejoin the tournament scene in the way I did back in the old days (back when Games Workshop ran their Grand Tournaments, which were a blast to attend), but I can see myself participating in the smaller events, like Combat Patrol or Zone Mortalis-style games.

A good friend of mine, Russ, has kept up with 40K tournaments and invited me to join him at Celesticon to check out the Daemon Skull 40K event run by Doc Dragon. I loitered a little, taking pictures, but mostly I tried to stay out of the way and not distract the players from their games.

I was impressed with the overall quality of painting on the armies I saw there. When I was an active tourney player, I never saw an airbrushed army; it just wasn't done back then. There were lots of airbrushed vehicles and large robots in evidence on the day and I enjoyed getting the opportunity to see them up close.

I can remember judging the army painting at a 50-player tournament many years ago and being disappointed to find that only *two* of the armies entered showed real evidence of effort and TLC put into them. Unfortunately, one of them included purchased units painted by a third party, so in that case, Best Painted was a no-brainer. There were plenty of armies in the Celesticon tournament that showed effort put into them. I think there was a clear winner for Best Painted (although I didn't stick around for the awards to find out), but the percentage of "nice" and "really nice" armies was pleasantly high.

I took shots of things in an, "ooo, shiny!" manner as it has been so long since I've played. I'd never seen an Eldar Wraithknight or Tau Riptide in person before. Games Workshop puts together some amazing stuff these days.

Kudos to all the players in the event; it looked like everyone was enjoying themselves. Now onto the photos. Apologies for the blurry ones:

The Seaside Slaughter Blood Bowl tournament was
back! A little later in the year than previously held, but as BB tournaments
are so far and few between in Northern California, I don’t care where it lands
on the calendar, I’d go ANY-time. Blood Bowl is by far my favorite tabletop
game and I’ll take any chance I get to play. I was attending along with friends
David (Undead), Bill (Skaven) and Russ (Skaven). This was a 3-round tournament
with 8 coaches participating.

I brought back my Chaos Dwarf team, the “Gorgoth

you’re interested, you can see the rules here: http://seaside.bloodbowlleague.com/default.asp?p=cp&cpid=3

Game One was vs. a Vampire team, the “Ottoburg
Sinisters,” coached by a regular league coach, Lee T. Lee brought a 6-Vampire roster with 7 Thralls
and 2 re-rolls (and no “Leader” chosen in his skill package). I hadn’t played a
game against Vampires before and as I had backed the recent Willy Miniatures
Indiegogo campaign for their new Vamp team, I was happy to get the chance to
see how they played.

11,000 fans turned up for the match, with Black
Dagger fans slightly outnumbering the Sinister Supporters, so the Chaos Dwarfs
had FAME +1. The weather was nice that day (and all tournament for me) and the
Vampires chose to kick off after winning the coin toss.

I knew that focusing on taking out Thralls was the
key to defeating a Vampire team, as once the Thralls were gone, the Bloodlust1
vulnerability of the Vampires would be their undoing.

I had a good first half, with three Thralls
removed as casualties and two Vampires KO’d. I did benefit from Lee’s bad luck at
key moments: after receiving, I had built my cage around the ball and moved up
the left side, pushing deep into his half of the pitch. Lee hypnotic-gazed two of the cage corners,
blitzed my ball carrier with a 3rd Vampire and sent a 4th
in to the steal the ball and dodge away.

With my Dwarfs so far into his half of the pitch,
I would never be able to catch him before he scored. Fortunately, he chose to dodge his ball
carrier past my Minotaur on the line of scrimmage, tripped, stunned himself and
dropped the ball. I was able to recover the ball with a Bull Centaur (Drago)
and score on Turn 8. Phew!

It also has to be said that Lee rolled a ‘1’ for
his Hypnotic-Gaze attempts four times in a row during the first half and at
least 1-2 more failed Gazes in the second half.
This, of course, was in addition to the occasional Bloodlust rolls that
would come up and mess with his plans; sometimes at key moments. More than once
he Bloodlusted on his Blitz! Action. Vampires are hard enough to play already,
it doesn’t help to fail 2/3rds of your hypno-gaze rolls.

The
two KO’d Vampires politely stayed Knocked Out following the Half-time show, so
Lee had to set up with just 8 players (4 Vamps, 4 Thralls) for the second half.
The aforementioned Bloodlust/Hypno-fail shenanigans continued. I helped out by triple-skulling with my
Minotaur (Kelgore the Bloodmad, who cried and flailed on the ground for a few
turns) and a Hobgoblin got mauled by a Vampire late in the game, but ultimately
I was able to get the ball away and score on Turn 16 with Barukh, my other Bull
Centaur.

So,
Game 1 ended in a 2-0 victory to the Black Daggers, and as I’d out-casualtied
3-1, I managed to pick up max tournament points (24).

1The Vampire team has two player types: Thralls,
which are basically human linemen with AV7, and the Vampires who are excellent
at everything, except for their “Bloodlust” weakness. Each time a Vampire activates, they have to
roll a d6: on a result of ‘1’ they are subject to Bloodlust which means at the
end of their activation they have to be standing next to a Thrall and then roll
for Injury on the Thrall (no armor roll, just see if they’re
stunned/KO/killed). If the Vampire
DOESN’T end its move next to a Thrall, they run into the crowd to feed on
someone, going to the Reserves box until the next Kick-off.

team: an Orc-themed Undead team. His
Ghouls were “goblin ghosts” while the Mummies were really imposing Black Orc

I want to pause for a moment and say that his team
roster was super-confusing as each player had a random 2-digit number… which
I’ve just now realized is because all his players are named after NFL players
and he used their real-life team numbers. When you’ve got player numbers like:
55, 58, 32, 20, 5, 66, 62, etc. you can’t expect your opponent to keep track of
which guy is which and what skills they have. It’s not as if the miniature
named after Ronnie Lott looks even remotely like the real man, so how am I
supposed to associate that random number with anything? Many times during the
game we would have to pause as I went down his roster print-out, find the
players (that were listed in no discernable order) and then decipher his
crossed-out and re-written skill choices. All the figures were painted
identically, so the only thing he’d done that helped was color-coded the bases
to player types (Ghouls had purple bases, Blitzers = orange, etc.); I’d know what
type of player that was, but not what his skills were.

I found this annoying, as Blood Bowl is already a
complicated game; playing to a time limit and/or in a tournament setting
heightens the potential for confusion. Do what you can to make it clear to your
opponent which players are which and what skills they have. It’s not hard. Use skill rings, or paint skills on the base,
or as I’ve done a few times, print out the skills and apply them to the base.
Number your players 1-16. If you really *must*
go with two digits, then use a system an opponent can follow. Number your
linemen sequentially: 21-26, your Blitzers 11-14, etc. Something logical. When
you print out your roster, group your player types together, for example: all
Blitzers at the top, then all linemen, then the next player-type, with Big Guys
and Stars at the bottom. Arrange them
however you prefer, but just putting them in randomly doesn’t help anyone,
including yourself. There were several moments in the game where he didn’t know
his own skills.

Okay, with that said, I want to make it clear that

Sisters of Battle vs. Chaos MarinesPreface:
It's been a couple years since I've updated this blog, primarily because (a) I don't really have the time and (b) my reluctance to post battle reports with unpainted miniatures.

I may do a separate blog post on painted vs. unpainted miniatures, but suffice it to say I most certainly prefer painted and am not a lazy SOB who never bothers to work on his minis. That said, if I did limit myself (and my friends) to painted-only games, I'd (a) get a lot fewer games played, (b) life is too short, (c) I've got 2 kids, wife, dog, house, etc. aka BUSY, and finally (d) I'll never update this blog again if I avoid the unpainted horrors.

I totally get it: I much prefer looking at pictures of beautifully-painted figures on an amazing tabletop. It's absolutely what I aspire to. I've reached that goal at times in the past, but can't do so *every time* I play a game. Just accept this batrep for what it is or turn away. Thanks for understanding.

Warhammer 40K 7th Edtion batrep: Sisters of Battle vs. Chaos Marines

I met up with my friend, Devon last night for our first game of Warhammer 40K 7th edition. With the exception of a single 500-point game of 6th edition we played in May, it has been nearly 6 years since I last played 40K and even longer for Devon. I was a regular 40K gamer during all of 3rd edition and a year or two of 2nd edition. I skipped 4th, dabbled a tiny bit in 5th, but with the release of the Imperial Knight, Games Workshop got my attention once more. I don't own an Imperial Knight... yet, but the release of that giant robot got me re-interested in the game and much to my surprise, I've bought not one but TWO new armies in 2014.

I have been steadily acquiring Sisters of Battle models over the last 3 months; most arriving in small batches via eBay. They've been stripped of bad paint-jobs and I've been filing off every vile mold-line I can find. It's a bit of an obsession for me. I spend far more time filing and prepping minis than painting, unfortunately (don't start). A few units have met minimum standards and will be used in their painted states until I have the other portions of the army painted, at which point, these figures will be stripped, prepped and painted to match. It has been interesting to see the variety of paint schemes that people have chosen.

Devon was the lucky recipient of a large Chaos Marine army this week from a very good friend and was eager to try them out. He estimates he could drop something like 4000 points on the table, all in foot troops. Neither of us have vehicles (other than a few Helbrutes) at this point, so we decided to play a small 500-point game on a 3' x 4' table.
The Helbrute and Cultist squads were purchased as a Formation from a dataslate which gave him some special rules. The Cultists worshiped the Helbrute and would work as ablative armor for incoming fire. They were also Fearless.

We set up the terrain in a mostly symmetrical pattern and rolled up a Maelstrom mission, because we wanted to use the new cards. We would set up on the long edges (6" deployment zone to compensate for the smaller table). I can't remember the name of the mission 100%, but I think it was "capture and control" or something very similar. Basically, if you controlled a Objective, you would draw objective cards at the end of your turn. If you didn't control any objectives, then you got no cards, which meant you wouldn't have the opportunity to score VPs. Each player started with one card.

For Warlord Traits, I got "Indomitable something" which gave the Canoness and her squad a 5+ invulnerable save. Devon got a Trait that allowed him to Infiltrate 3 units, which he did with his Marine squads and Chaos Lord.

Okay, onto the pictures. Here's our deployment; Chaos on the left, Ecclessiarchy on the right:
Gameplay underway: The Seraphim squad were given a suicide mission on Turn 2: Jump over the ruined Cathedral and thin out the Cultist squads protecting the Helbrute. I made a slight error in judgement here, as I forgot these were two separate squads and I could only shoot one of them (you'd think the bright red vs. grey minis would have been a clear reminder, but no... they were all Damned Souls to my Sisters). The Retributors helped out, killing 3 of the grey squad (including the unit leader) while the Seraphim unloaded with their four flamer templates, re-rolling Wounds thanks to their Act of Faith. 24 hits and 16 Wounds later, the red squad was incinerated and the Seraphim with bolt pistols never got to fire a shot:
This meant that the Helbrute and remainig Cultists would swarm the Seraphim on their Turn 2 and wipe them out. This they did with relative ease, after which they consolidated onto an Objective:
Good times. We will have a rematch in the near future and see what changes. One big goof I made throughout the game was thinking that Sisters had Ballistic Skill 3, when it is in fact 4! D'oh! I don't know how big a difference it would have made on the outcome. Once close combat started, the outcome was generally inevitable.

I look forward to the rematch and getting more Sisters assembled and painted.
Let's get right to business: this Saturday, November 10th, after about a month of work assembling the final models needed to finish two 1,000 point armies (Orcs and Goblins) and re-doing movement trays I finally got a chance to try out Mantic Games' "Kings of War" fantasy battle system. I'd backed their Kickstarter campaign *cough* quite excessively *cough* and have wanted to give the rules a spin ever since, as they look clean, simple and straightforward. None of the vague and overly complex rules you'll find elsewhere that can induce hours of arguments and page-flipping. Kings of War looks to me like a good set of 28mm rules for reasonable opponents who are interested in enjoying a bit of carnage over the tabletop without cutting each other's throats with rules loopholes.

I enlisted the generalship of my friend, Rich and with a couple of army lists and a box of terrain we were ready to give it a go!
These two lists were based on the models I had assembled many years previously for playing Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy Battles game. I dabbled in that game system and enjoyed it at very small points values, but never got into it "whole hog". These might not be the best lists for one or both armies; I wouldn't know at this point, but you might as well start somewhere and this is what I had available. With the arrival of Mantic's "Kings of War" hardcover rule book (and the first trickle of what will be an avalanche of models) I got the final 20 or so models banged together and we were ready to march. Rich chose to command the Orcs, so I would be coaching the Goblins in our first battle.

The previous two pictures demonstrate one aspect of the rules that did trip us up, although a better example is coming in Game Two. When charging, a unit doesn't need to respect the 1" away-from-other-models rule, so the Orc general on the boar was able to gallop (do boars gallop!?) behind his ranked Orc warriors to slam into the Fleariders and mash them to a pulp. I wasn't expecting this maneuver, but hey, we're noobies! I'll also take this opportunity to say that Wip the Half-Cast is a *great* character. His ability to either Heal or Zap! is really worth the points. Imho, this Ax horde probably wouldn't have survived my concentrated efforts if not for his repeated Healing spells bolstering their numbers.
This was another spot in the rules that we had to decide on ourselves before starting the game. There are some rules about shooting that say something about 3" of difficult terrain (can't remember them exactly just now), so we decided that (a) units could not see all the way through and beyond an area of forest and (b) units can only see up to 3" into/out of an area of forest. The trolls were standing just on the edge of the forest, but couldn't see out the other side (more than 3" deep), which would disallow them to charge in the following turn.
You can just imagine how well the Wiz (1 attack) fared against the Krudger (5 attacks) in close combat. Unfortunately, this is my last photo from our first game, so you'll have to use your imagination from here on:
The Gore Riders and Gore Chariot advanced on the Big Rock Thrower, which after a couple warm-up shots, managed to hit and annihilate the Orc Sniff Troop. The Flearider Sniffs galloped in pursuit of the Chariot and eventually destroyed it in a rear flank charge, but not before the Chariot crashed into and dismantled the Rock Thrower.
The trolls clambered through the woods just in time to get off a charge on the Gore Riders rear arc and destroyed them in one go. At this point, the Orc Krudger who had just defeated the Goblin Wiz went into a bonafide killing frenzy, slaughtering all 3 trolls in one round, then following up by destroying the Flearider Sniffs on the next turn. That one character destroyed 25% of the Goblin army on his own!
On the goblin left flank, the Giant charged Wip the Half-Cast and stomped him into mush, preventing him from continuing to heal up the Ax horde, which managed to defeat the Goblin Sharpstick horde. The mounted Krudger charged the inept Goblin archers and routed all 20 of them by his lonesome!
Our game did go 7 rounds, so I can't recall if the Ax horde had the time to pivot, charge and kill the Giant or not, but iirc, my army was completely wiped out and Rich had both his Krudgers and the Ax Horde alive at the end. With 435 points of Orcs still on the table, Rich could claim a resounding victory against the Goblins.

Despite the brevity of the rules, we spent a fair amount of time page-flipping to get familiar with the system, so this first attempt went quite long; over 3 hours. Most of our uncertainty revolved around how to determine if the unit leader could see an enemy unit and whether they could charge or not.
We did get some rules fundamentally incorrect in this (and the following) game. Most embarrassingly, we added in rules for how combat is resolved from another system without even realizing it. The explanation on how to conduct combat is only a single page long and we still managed to do it quite wrong! I can only blame this on my inattentiveness and the fact that when you've played many different-but-similar rules systems, sometimes you will accidentally cross-pollinate. We only realized our error at the very end of the game and had a good laugh about it. We don't think it actually ruined that game in any way. It made combat more deadly, but it added more dice rolls, so slowed things down a little.
The other mistake we made (in both games) was misunderstanding how many pivots a unit gets when moving At the Double. I thought all units got one pivot At the Double, but that only applies to Nimble troops (like Fleabag Riders). As a result, our units were a bit more maneuverable in both games, but c'est la vie. We'll play it correctly next time.

Right! Fewer pictures from Game Two, but still enjoyable I hope. We swapped armies and left the terrain set up as before.

The Morax regiment is ganged up on by the Trolls and Fleabag Rider Sniffs.

The picture above is worth talking about for a couple reasons.
First off, Rich rolled *horribly* for his attacks from both the Trolls and the flanking Fleabag riders. I believe he caused only one or possibly two wounds with this attack. What a disaster. On the following turn the Morax would charge the Trolls and kill them off, negating the big advantage he had at this moment in the battle.
Secondly, this photo shows one of the times we had trouble determining whether a unit could charge or not: Following his attack, the Trolls and Fleabag riders backed away one inch. On my turn, I wanted to charge the Fleabag riders with my Krudger (Orc leader). The Fleabag unit was in my front arc, so I could see them, they were clearly within charge distance and I could contact the front base of the left-most Fleabag rider. At that point, assuming the charge was legal, the next thing to do was slide the Krudger to align with the center of the Fleabag unit. This would cram the Krudger between the Morax regiment and the Fleabags as there was only a 1" gap between them.
The rules say that units are supposed to stay 1" apart from each other, except when charging, so it seemed to us that (a) the charge move was legal and that (b) it was a little dodgy to align the Krudger with the Fleabags, but ultimately we allowed it, scooching them away from the Morax regiment a little.
This came up multiple times in both our battles and we did quite a bit of head-scratching over it, but as far as I can tell, I think (hope) we did this charge correctly. Anyone with more experience with the system, please chime in in the comments section to let us know.
Our final picture of the battle. Luck had abandoned Commander Rich earlier with the Trolls & Fleabag riders... and sure, failing to kill that Krudger was pretty unlikely. We would find out now that Luck had actually only been toying with Rich and was now going to Get Serious.
Having dealt with the Giant, the Ax Horde was moving on for a meet-and-greet with the Sharpsticks. It looked like the Sharpsticks would get the first charge however... right up until they rolled Utterly Spineless and halted in their tracks. This was the first of two failed Utterly Spineless rolls that would really sink Rich's hopes of a win or even a tie.
The Ax horde, assisted by the mounted Krudger annihilated the Sharpsticks, when it could have easily gone the other way round. This was then followed up by both Krudgers and the Gore Chariot charging the second horde of Sharpsticks and wiping them out as well.
I can't recall if the Fleabag Riders failed their own Spineless test, allowing the Chariot to escape, or if it was the 2nd Sharpstick Horde that failed, allowing the Krudgers to gang up on them, but regardless it was another seriously inopportune moment to roll a one on Rich's part.

After finishing this game (which went by much faster than the first, btw) we felt like the Goblin army was underpowered compared to the Orcs, but looking back on the phenomenal bad luck Rich had in our second game I'm less sure. The Gore Chariot certainly strikes me as an underpowered unit compared to the others; we both gave it more respect than I think it deserved. The Trolls were easy victims in both games, although they did have that spectacular charge into the Gore Rider's rear arc. I'm undecided on those. The Rock Thrower wasn't particularly effective, but we could see how having 3 of them could get some great results.
I enjoyed getting these armies fully assembled and back on the table. I like the Kings of War rules and look forward to more games. The few rules we puzzled over and/or played incorrectly don't look difficult to resolve for future plays, so I'm optimistic.
I've only just started assembling the first of my actual Mantic miniatures; it'll be quite some time before I can field my Abyssal Dwarf army. I'll just keep chipping away at it and eventually they'll be ready for battle too. Of course, all these miniatures are begging to be painted, which is a monumental task in itself (especially for middle-aged fathers of young kids like myself), but I'll do my best.

This is rather an epic first post! I can't promise frequent or thorough updates, but I wanted to get these batreps posted somewhere and thought this was probably the place to do it. Thanks for reading and please leave any comments you have. I'd love to read some feedback. :-)
